Moving to North Austin checklist

Eight or more weeks out: orient yourself

• List your non-negotiables: commute ceiling, home size, yard, budget, timeline.
• Talk to a lender early so your budget reflects taxes, insurance and any HOA dues.
• Have your agent map the corridors — Lago Vista, Leander, Cedar Park, Liberty Hill, Round Rock, North Austin — against your workplace.
• Decide whether you'll rent first or buy on arrival.

Six weeks out: plan the visit

• Schedule a weekday trip so you experience real traffic conditions.
• Block one day for driving areas and one or two for touring homes.
• Drive your actual commute at your actual departure time, both directions.
• Visit the everyday places you'd use: groceries, gym, medical, hardware.
• Research schools yourself through official district sources if that matters to you.

Four weeks out: lock logistics

• Get quotes from at least three movers and confirm insurance coverage.
• Reserve elevators, gate access or parking if applicable.
• Start purging — moving costs scale with weight and volume.
• Collect medical, dental, veterinary and school records.
• Order any needed packing supplies.

Two weeks out: switch the services

• Set start dates for electricity, water, trash, gas and internet at the new address.
• Schedule shutoff at the old address for the day after you leave.
• File a change of address and update banks, employers and subscriptions.
• Confirm homeowners insurance is bound and effective at closing.
• Arrange pet transport and travel details.

Moving week

• Pack an essentials box: tools, chargers, medications, linens, paper goods.
• Photograph electronics and furniture condition before loading.
• Keep documents, valuables and closing paperwork with you, not on the truck.
• Do a final walkthrough of the new home before closing.
• Confirm gate codes, keys, garage remotes and alarm information at closing.

First two weeks in Texas

• Handle driver license, vehicle registration and inspection per current state requirements.
• Register to vote and update auto and health insurance.
• Change the locks and codes, and test smoke and CO detectors.
• Locate the water shutoff, electrical panel and HVAC filters.
• Read your HOA documents and note trash, parking and exterior rules.
• Find local providers: doctor, dentist, vet, plumber, lawn service.

First year

• Review your property tax notice and any applicable exemptions with a qualified professional.
• Service the HVAC seasonally and check attic insulation and drainage after heavy rain.
• Meet your neighbors — they're the best source of practical local knowledge.
